Samurai

“Samurai”

With the death of Samurai, a Fleckvieh-episode came to an end. This Swabian
sire fitted excellently into the Fleckvieh breeding in Upper Bavaria because
he was a real outcross.  From the sire-side he can be traced back to the
famous Fleckvieh-lines Streik, Hektus, Bayer and Salus and the quite unknown
sires Helmo 6500/12 and Robor 8752. As you can easily see his sire-lines are
completely free of Haxl-, Horex- and Redad-blood, which today have a great
influence on the pedigrees.

On the dam-side it is almost the same: Zamur from the Zarter-line, Honig,
Metz, Salus and Senat – all famous old Fleckvieh lines as well as the
unknown sires Steiner 19216/01 and Peso 5552/15. On the dam side also, there is no
Haxl or Redad blood with only a small percentage of Honig
blood.

His pedigree might be the reason for his success in Upper Bavaria. Using a
different line on the Fleckvieh cows in Upper Bavaria that are mostly
dominated by Haxl and Horex blood resulted in maximum of hybrid vigour.
Samurai gained his breeding license in August 1997. Samurai tested in a very low herd production level of 5.200kg milk. From the first lactation his daughters
exceeded the average herd production by 200 kg, a result that was reached
only by very few sires.  His daughters were also not fed enough energy, which had some influence on their type traits.

From the beginning of his career Samurai was compared to the Steg-son, Stego
who also combined interesting bloodlines. These two bulls still are the same
as far as the milk yield is concerned but the type traits of Samurai (with
558 inspected daughters) are much better than those of Stego (with 96
inspected daughters) especially as far as the udders are concerned (Samurai:
104, Stego: 88).

After gaining his breeding license, Samurai  was used in many European countries. At the interbull breeding value estimation centre the production
of 21.679 daughters was registered. He is one of the most famous Fleckvieh
sires of our AI-centre, only Romen and Rexon have more daughters. But since
we have enough Samurai semen he might exceed these sires some time during
the next years. In Bavaria already more than 100.000 first inseminations
were done. There are purebred daughters in the following European and
non-European countries:

Germany, South Africa , Austria, Italy, France, Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Spain, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey,
Egypt, Mexico and Brasilia. Currently 07/02/16 there are 72,666 daughters on the ZAR database

In his second homeland, Slovakia, Samurai was the top sire of all Slovakian
Fleckvieh sires and also of  imported semen.

Samurai-daughters out of Holstein cows are expected in the following
countries: South Africa, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain,
Northern Ireland, US, Canada and Australia.

The following three reasons made Samurai to be one of the most famous and most
used sires:

a.. Bloodline
b.. High production of milk and beef
c.. Docile temperament of his offspring

Samurai-daughters had average type traits, excellent milk productions and
optimal fat / protein ratios (BV: +917kg milk, -0,05% fat and +0,01%
protein) and are very docile.

These traits add to the fact that Samurai might be the best ambassador for
the Fleckvieh breed in Holstein farms. The Holstein cows added the good
udders and frame and Samurai brought about substance, easy handling and
natural strengths.

At the EuroTier 2002 in Hannover,  pure- and crossbred Samurai-daughters
demonstrated their qualities to a broad international public, which increased the
number of insemination’s  again.

Influence on Fleckvieh breeding

A fact that nobody had expected occurred: the first Samurai sons appeared in
the Fleckvieh top list. Among the top 20 Fleckvieh sires there are three
Samurai sons: Sampras (No. 5), Safir (No. 14) and Siegi (No. 18). Samurai
takes place 33. He is the only top sire who has a tested heterocygous polled
son with breeding licence. Soldo PpS, who not only transmits a good milk
production and type traits but also makes dehorning unnecessary in every
second progeny. In future we hopefully will get several interesting
Samurai-sons. Especially the combination with the Horex line seems to bring
good results, but it will take some more years till we know the real value
of Samurai for Fleckvieh breeding. But already today we can say that Samurai
is an outstanding sire.

In Grub we sure will give Samurai a place of honour in the ancestral
portrait gallery of sires, since he added a lot to the profit of our
AI-centre. He was an uncomplicated sire- just as we want the future
Fleckvieh-cows to be. Take your chance – you can still make use of his genes
via AI or via the genes of his sons.

On the cattle shows in spring 2002 Samurai-daugthers surprised with excellent type traits and stable performances.
The daughters have high productions, excellent type traits and perfect udders.
The sire Samurai is one of the most interesting outcross Fleckvieh bulls. He is the only sire who has Haxl-free Zamur blood.
There are only very few sires that stay in the top-list for such a long time like Samurai. The reasons for this are the reliable milk and beef production and the calm and placid temperament of the daughters, a trait that is not measurable but of great importance for the farmers. Samurai and his sons will have a great impact on the Fleckvieh business.
Samurai-daughters in milk were not only a sensation in Germany but also in Sweden and South Africa.

F1 Samurai-daughters (50% Fleckvieh; 50% Holstein)
Samurai-daughters out of Holstein cows are a sensation in the Holstein breeding areas, since the F1 crossing cows convince the farmers already at the beginning of the first lactation. Although Samurai-daughters sometimes do not fully meet our demands, he is a good basis for further meetings.
F2- and F3-cows show lots of muscle which makes these cows excellent suited for matings with milk type Fleckvieh-bulls.
